Safari Animals Word Search

Free printable safari animals word search: the lion, the elephant and the rest of the savanna, in a beginner-friendly grid.

This Safari Animals collection includes three word searches built around the animals of the African savanna, each aimed at a different kind of solver. Easy covers the animals nearly everyone can already name on sight. Medium adds animals and behaviors that need a bit more familiarity. Hard turns to the real vocabulary of savanna ecology and wildlife conservation.

Every printable PDF includes an answer key and is reviewed before publication.

Best for ages 5–8 and first-time solvers.

This is for a solver who already knows lions, elephants and giraffes from books and documentaries, and simply wants to find them in a grid. Nothing here depends on knowing anything beyond the obvious.

Words run only left-to-right or top-to-bottom, so there is no hidden trick waiting to catch a beginner off guard, just the satisfaction of tracking a familiar name across the page.

It is the version to hand a young child, use for an early animal unit, or reach for when the goal is a short, easy win.

Vocabulary analysis

Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.

With an average word length of 6.0 letters, this puzzle sits at a moderate 40.0% grid coverage, balancing genuine challenge with enough empty space to keep scanning manageable.

Why we chose this word list

We used "rhino" rather than "rhinoceros": both are accepted names, and the shorter form keeps the grid readable for beginners without losing accuracy.

Predator and prey are mixed deliberately (lion and cheetah alongside zebra and buffalo), matching how these animals are usually taught together as a savanna ecosystem.

Why this level is easy

  • Only horizontal and vertical words — no diagonals
  • No reversed words
  • Short, everyday vocabulary
  • No uncommon spellings
  • Minimal overlaps between words

Ideal for upper elementary students and casual puzzle fans.

This version is for someone who already finds the most famous savanna animals too easy, and wants a bit more genuine vocabulary. It adds animals and details that are real but a step past the obvious.

Diagonal words show up here for the first time, so the eye actually has to search the grid rather than scan it in straight lines.

It sits deliberately between a beginner's puzzle and a real challenge, adding just enough new ground to feel like progress.

Vocabulary analysis

Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.

With an average word length of 6.3 letters, this puzzle sits at a moderate 42.2% grid coverage, balancing genuine challenge with enough empty space to keep scanning manageable.

Why we chose this word list

We added "vulture" and "jackal" specifically because scavengers are usually left out of "big animal" safari lists, even though they are essential to how a savanna ecosystem actually works.

"Antelope" is included as the general term alongside the specific "impala", so solvers see how a species name relates to its broader family — a small but real biology lesson.

Why this level is medium

  • Horizontal, vertical and diagonal words
  • No reversed words
  • Mixed word lengths, some less common vocabulary
  • Moderate overlaps between words

Designed for experienced solvers and adults.

This is built for someone who wants a real challenge, not just bigger letters on the same list. The vocabulary shifts toward the language of savanna ecology and wildlife conservation, the terms used by people who actually study or protect these animals.

Every direction is available, including reversed words, and the filler is built to genuinely resemble real answers rather than random letters.

It takes sustained attention rather than a glance, and rewards someone who wants to actually be tested.

Vocabulary analysis

Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.

With an average word length of 8.9 letters, this puzzle sits at a moderate 44.5% grid coverage, balancing genuine challenge with enough empty space to keep scanning manageable. 3 of its words share letters with at least one other word on the list, so a single letter in the grid can belong to more than one hidden answer — a real source of extra difficulty beyond word count alone.

Why we chose this word list

We included "poaching" and "conservation" together deliberately: safari puzzles that only celebrate the animals without acknowledging the real pressures on them feel incomplete to us.

"Matriarch" refers to the female-led social structure of elephant herds — a specific, accurate detail rather than a generic word chosen just because it fit the grid.

Why this level is hard

  • All eight directions, including reversed words
  • Longer, denser word list
  • Similar-looking decoy letter sequences in the filler
  • Frequent overlaps between words

Why this is a Large Print edition

  • All eight directions, including reversed words — same rule as Hard
  • Same word list and word count as our Medium puzzle — full challenge, not a simplified one
  • 15×12 grid: fewer rows than a standard 15×15, freeing real vertical space for larger lettering
  • 20pt or larger lettering throughout, verified to actually fit the grid, not just requested
  • Simplified Puzzle Passport with no fill-in blanks, leaving maximum room for the letters themselves
