Pets Word Search
Free printable pets word search: dogs, cats and the rest of the household menagerie, in a beginner-friendly grid.
This Pets collection includes three word searches built around the animals people actually keep at home, each aimed at a different kind of solver. Easy covers the pets almost every child already knows. Medium adds less common pets and the basics of caring for them. Hard turns to the real vocabulary of animal care and veterinary practice.
Every printable PDF includes an answer key and is reviewed before publication.
Pets — Easy Word Search

Best for ages 5–8 and first-time solvers.
This is for a young solver who may well have one of these animals at home already, or wants one. The win here is personal as much as it is a puzzle, finding your own dog, cat, or hamster on the page.
Words run only left-to-right or top-to-bottom, with nothing hidden to trip up a first-time solver.
It is the version for a young child, an early classroom activity, or simply a calm, low-pressure few minutes.
Vocabulary analysis
Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.
With an average word length of 5.1 letters, this puzzle stays relatively open at 34.2% grid coverage, making it easier to spot new words at a glance.
Why we chose this word list
We used "hamster" and "canary" instead of compound terms like "guinea pig", consistent with our own rule against compound vocabulary at the easy level.
Every word names an animal a child could plausibly own, so the puzzle doubles as a simple survey prompt ("which of these do you have?") for a classroom activity.
Why this level is easy
- Only horizontal and vertical words — no diagonals
- No reversed words
- Short, everyday vocabulary
- No uncommon spellings
- Minimal overlaps between words
Pets — Medium Word Search

Ideal for upper elementary students and casual puzzle fans.
This version moves past the most common pets into ones a solver has to actually think about, along with the basic language of keeping them. It rewards a bit of real pet knowledge, not just recognition.
Diagonal words appear here for the first time, so the grid takes real scanning rather than a straight read.
It sits between a beginner's puzzle and a genuine challenge, without needing specialist knowledge to solve.
Vocabulary analysis
Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.
With an average word length of 5.9 letters, this puzzle stays relatively open at 39.6% grid coverage, making it easier to spot new words at a glance. 2 of its words share letters with at least one other word on the list, so a single letter in the grid can belong to more than one hidden answer — a real source of extra difficulty beyond word count alone.
Why we chose this word list
We added breed words ("terrier", "retriever") and coat/pattern words ("tabby") rather than more animal species, because most solvers already know what a dog and cat are — the next step is the vocabulary around them.
"Puppy" and "kitten" sit alongside "dog" and "cat" on purpose, reinforcing that these are life stages of the same animal, not separate creatures — a detail young solvers sometimes miss.
Why this level is medium
- Horizontal, vertical and diagonal words
- No reversed words
- Mixed word lengths, some less common vocabulary
- Moderate overlaps between words
Pets — Hard Word Search
| Grid size | 20x20 |

Designed for experienced solvers and adults.
This is for someone who wants the real vocabulary behind pet ownership, not just a longer list of animal names. The words lean toward the language a veterinarian or serious pet owner would actually use.
Every direction is in play, including reversed words, with filler letters built to resemble genuine answers.
It rewards sustained attention rather than a quick glance, a puzzle for someone who takes the subject seriously.
Vocabulary analysis
Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.
With an average word length of 9.3 letters, this puzzle sits at a moderate 46.3% grid coverage, balancing genuine challenge with enough empty space to keep scanning manageable. 1 of its words share letters with at least one other word on the list, so a single letter in the grid can belong to more than one hidden answer — a real source of extra difficulty beyond word count alone.
Why we chose this word list
We chose "adoption" and "shelter" over "breeder" alone deliberately, to reflect that responsible pet acquisition includes both paths, not just buying from a breeder.
"Socialization" refers to the early-life training that shapes a pet's adult temperament — a real veterinary and behavioral concept, not a filler word chosen for its length.
Why this level is hard
- All eight directions, including reversed words
- Longer, denser word list
- Similar-looking decoy letter sequences in the filler
- Frequent overlaps between words
