Farm Animals Word Search
Free printable farm animals word search puzzles: the cow, the pig, the hen and the rest of the barnyard, in a beginner-friendly grid.
This Farm Animals collection includes four separate word searches built around the same barnyard vocabulary, each aimed at a different kind of solver. Easy suits a child's first word search. Medium adds young-animal names and a touch more vocabulary. Hard turns to the real working language of an actual farm. Large Print reuses that vocabulary at full difficulty, simply printed larger.
Every printable PDF includes an answer key and is reviewed before publication.

Best for ages 5–8 and first-time solvers.
This is usually someone's very first word search, or close to it. The goal is a quick, confidence-building win, not a challenge.
The animals here are ones a child already knows by sight and can proudly name out loud before they've even started looking for them in the grid. Words run only left-to-right or top-to-bottom, so there is no hidden trick to catch a beginner off guard; the satisfaction comes purely from recognizing a familiar word and tracking it across the page.
It is the version to hand a five-year-old, use in an early reading group, or reach for when the goal is simply a calm, low-pressure few minutes with a pencil.
Vocabulary analysis
Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.
With an average word length of 4.6 letters, this puzzle stays relatively open at 38.3% grid coverage, making it easier to spot new words at a glance.
Why we chose this word list
We deliberately excluded compound names such as "guinea pig", because visually similar vocabulary makes scanning harder for early readers.
The vocabulary matches what most English-speaking children encounter during their first years of school.
Why this level is easy
- Only horizontal and vertical words — no diagonals
- No reversed words
- Short, everyday vocabulary
- No uncommon spellings
- Minimal overlaps between words

Ideal for upper elementary students and casual puzzle fans.
This version is for someone who has already solved a few word searches and wants the grid to ask a bit more of them.
The vocabulary steps past the obvious animal names into the words around them — the young ones, the less common names — without leaping into anything an adult would need to explain. Diagonal words appear for the first time here, so scanning stops being purely linear; you have to actually search the grid rather than read it in straight lines.
It sits deliberately between a beginner's puzzle and a real challenge: enough new vocabulary to feel like progress, not so much that it stops being enjoyable.
Vocabulary analysis
Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.
With an average word length of 4.8 letters, this puzzle stays relatively open at 32.0% grid coverage, making it easier to spot new words at a glance. 1 of its words share letters with at least one other word on the list, so a single letter in the grid can belong to more than one hidden answer — a real source of extra difficulty beyond word count alone.
Why we chose this word list
We included young-animal names ("foal", "lamb", "piglet") deliberately: they are a natural next step in vocabulary once the adult animal names are already familiar from the Easy version.
"Gander" (a male goose) is here because it is exactly the kind of specific, slightly less common word that separates a Medium puzzle from an Easy one without requiring adult vocabulary.
Why this level is medium
- Horizontal, vertical and diagonal words
- No reversed words
- Mixed word lengths, some less common vocabulary
- Moderate overlaps between words

Designed for experienced solvers and adults.
This is the version for someone who wants density, not decoration. The grid is larger, the words are longer, and every direction is in play, including backward; nothing here is placed to be found quickly.
The vocabulary shifts entirely, away from animal names and into the working language of an actual farm, dense enough that decoy letter sequences in the filler genuinely resemble real answers instead of just static.
Solving it takes sustained attention rather than a quick scan, and finishing it feels less like a kids' activity and more like the kind of puzzle a serious solver keeps around for a proper sit-down session.
Vocabulary analysis
Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.
With an average word length of 7.9 letters, this puzzle stays relatively open at 39.5% grid coverage, making it easier to spot new words at a glance. 1 of its words share letters with at least one other word on the list, so a single letter in the grid can belong to more than one hidden answer — a real source of extra difficulty beyond word count alone.
Why we chose this word list
Words like "heifer", "farrowing" and "ruminant" are genuine agricultural terms with precise meanings, not decorative jargon — each one names something a working farm actually manages.
"Rotation" refers to crop rotation, included because sustainable grazing and crop management are as central to real farm life as the animals themselves.
Why this level is hard
- All eight directions, including reversed words
- Longer, denser word list
- Similar-looking decoy letter sequences in the filler
- Frequent overlaps between words

Best for adults, seniors, and anyone who prefers larger, easier-to-read print.
Vocabulary analysis
Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.
With an average word length of 4.8 letters, this puzzle sits at a moderate 40.0% grid coverage, balancing genuine challenge with enough empty space to keep scanning manageable. 1 of its words share letters with at least one other word on the list, so a single letter in the grid can belong to more than one hidden answer — a real source of extra difficulty beyond word count alone.
Why this is a Large Print edition
- All eight directions, including reversed words — same rule as Hard
- Same word list and word count as our Medium puzzle — full challenge, not a simplified one
- 15×12 grid: fewer rows than a standard 15×15, freeing real vertical space for larger lettering
- 20pt or larger lettering throughout, verified to actually fit the grid, not just requested
- Simplified Puzzle Passport with no fill-in blanks, leaving maximum room for the letters themselves
