Best for ages 5–8 and first-time solvers.
This is for a solver who already knows polar bears, penguins and seals from books and documentaries, and just wants to find them on the page. Nothing here depends on knowing anything beyond the obvious.
Words run only left-to-right or top-to-bottom, so there is no hidden trick waiting for a beginner.
It is a short, confidence-building puzzle, good for an early classroom unit or a calm few minutes with a pencil.
Vocabulary analysis
Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.
With an average word length of 6.0 letters, this puzzle sits at a moderate 40.0% grid coverage, balancing genuine challenge with enough empty space to keep scanning manageable.
Why we chose this word list
We avoided the common shortcut of writing "polar bear" as two separate concepts merged into one word; compound animal names are excluded from our easy vocabulary on principle.
Sea mammals (walrus, seal, narwhal, orca) and land animals (reindeer, husky, lemming) are balanced roughly evenly, so the puzzle doesn't skew entirely marine despite "Arctic" often being read that way.
Why this level is easy
- Only horizontal and vertical words — no diagonals
- No reversed words
- Short, everyday vocabulary
- No uncommon spellings
- Minimal overlaps between words
Arctic Animals — Medium Word Search

Ideal for upper elementary students and casual puzzle fans.
This version moves past the most famous Arctic animals into species and details that take a bit more real familiarity to place.
Diagonal words appear here for the first time, so the grid genuinely has to be searched rather than read in straight lines.
It sits between a beginner's puzzle and a real challenge, widening the vocabulary without needing specialist knowledge.
Vocabulary analysis
Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.
With an average word length of 6.2 letters, this puzzle sits at a moderate 41.3% grid coverage, balancing genuine challenge with enough empty space to keep scanning manageable.
Why we chose this word list
We deliberately balanced this list toward land animals (ptarmigan, ermine, muskox, stoat) since the Easy version already leaned heavily marine — a fuller picture of Arctic wildlife needs both.
"Caribou" and "reindeer" are the same species by different regional names; we kept both because solvers in North America and Europe each expect their own term, and the overlap is a genuine, teachable fact.
Why this level is medium
- Horizontal, vertical and diagonal words
- No reversed words
- Mixed word lengths, some less common vocabulary
- Moderate overlaps between words

Designed for experienced solvers and adults.
This is for someone who wants the real vocabulary of how animals actually survive in one of the harshest environments on Earth, not just a longer list of species names.
Every direction is available, including reversed words, with filler letters built to resemble real answers.
It takes sustained attention rather than a glance, built for someone who wants a genuine challenge, not just a bigger grid.
Vocabulary analysis
Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.
With an average word length of 8.8 letters, this puzzle sits at a moderate 43.8% grid coverage, balancing genuine challenge with enough empty space to keep scanning manageable. 1 of its words share letters with at least one other word on the list, so a single letter in the grid can belong to more than one hidden answer — a real source of extra difficulty beyond word count alone.
Why we chose this word list
"Blubber" and "insulation" are included together because they are the two real physiological answers to "how do these animals survive the cold" — a question every Arctic-themed puzzle should actually answer.
"Permafrost" is a specific, technical term describing permanently frozen ground, included because Arctic ecosystems are increasingly discussed in the context of climate change, not just as a stage for wildlife.
Why this level is hard
- All eight directions, including reversed words
- Longer, denser word list
- Similar-looking decoy letter sequences in the filler
- Frequent overlaps between words
