This page holds the general Halloween puzzle, in five formats. Easy (12x10 grid, 10 words) sticks to words nearly every child already knows, and words run only across and down. Medium (15x15, 15 words) adds diagonals and more specific seasonal vocabulary. Hard (20x20, 20 words) uses all eight directions, including reversed words.

Large Print (15x12 grid, 22 pt) reuses the Medium list at full difficulty for readers who prefer bigger type, and the Giant edition packs 100 Halloween words into a 35x35 grid. Specific themes such as ghosts, witches or trick-or-treating have their own puzzles in the Halloween collection.

Every printable PDF includes its answer key on page 2 and is reviewed before publication.

This is for a young solver who already knows these words from trick-or-treating and classroom parties, and just wants to find them in the grid.

Words run only left-to-right or top-to-bottom, so there's no hidden trick waiting for a beginner.

It's the version for a first classroom activity, a family Halloween tradition, or a calm few minutes with a pencil.

Vocabulary analysis

Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.

With an average word length of 5.6 letters, this puzzle sits at a moderate 46.7% grid coverage, balancing genuine challenge with enough empty space to keep scanning manageable.

Why we chose this word list

We kept this list broad on purpose — a little of everything — leaving specific creatures and traditions to their own dedicated puzzles rather than overlapping content.

Every word here is something a child would recognize from decorations, costumes or a classroom Halloween party.

Why this level is Easy

  • Only horizontal and vertical words — no diagonals
  • No reversed words
  • Short, everyday vocabulary
  • No uncommon spellings
  • Minimal overlaps between words
Medium

Halloween — Medium Word Search (15 Words)

Ideal for upper elementary students and casual puzzle fans — download the printable PDF, a 15x15 grid with 15 words, and the answer key on page 2.

This version moves past the most familiar words into vocabulary that takes a bit more real familiarity with the wider range of Halloween tradition to place.

Diagonal words appear here for the first time, so scanning takes real attention rather than a straight read.

It sits between a beginner's puzzle and a real challenge, without needing every tradition memorized to solve.

Vocabulary analysis

Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.

With an average word length of 7.4 letters, this puzzle sits at a moderate 49.3% grid coverage, balancing genuine challenge with enough empty space to keep scanning manageable. 1 of its words shares letters with at least one other word on the list, so a single letter in the grid can belong to more than one hidden answer — a real source of extra difficulty beyond word count alone.

Why we chose this word list

We distinguished "cemetery" and "graveyard" deliberately: both are correct, commonly used terms, and including both reinforces that they mean the same thing.

"Werewolf" is included as the one classic monster without its own dedicated sub-puzzle, since folklore werewolf vocabulary overlaps heavily with our Monsters and Vampires puzzles.

Why this level is Medium

  • Horizontal, vertical and diagonal words
  • No reversed words
  • Mixed word lengths, some less common vocabulary
  • Moderate overlaps between words
Hard

Halloween — Hard Word Search (20 Words)

This is for someone who wants real command of the fuller range of Halloween tradition, not just a longer list of familiar words.

Every direction is in play, including reversed words, with filler letters built to resemble genuine answers.

It takes sustained attention rather than a glance, built for someone who takes the season seriously.

Vocabulary analysis

Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.

With an average word length of 10.4 letters, this puzzle sits at a moderate 51.7% grid coverage, balancing genuine challenge with enough empty space to keep scanning manageable. 5 of its words share letters with at least one other word on the list, so a single letter in the grid can belong to more than one hidden answer — a real source of extra difficulty beyond word count alone.

Why we chose this word list

"Jackolantern" is spelled as one word here to fit the grid — the traditional name is "jack-o'-lantern", one of the holiday's most recognizable compound terms.

"Folklore" and "tradition" are included deliberately, since Halloween's imagery comes from centuries of real cultural history, not just modern costumes and candy.

Why this level is Hard

  • All eight directions, including reversed words
  • Longer, denser word list
  • Similar-looking decoy letter sequences in the filler
  • Frequent overlaps between words

Vocabulary analysis

Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.

With an average word length of 7.4 letters, this puzzle is densely packed at 61.7% grid coverage — less empty space means fewer easy gaps to scan past, so finding each word takes closer attention. 1 of its words shares letters with at least one other word on the list, so a single letter in the grid can belong to more than one hidden answer — a real source of extra difficulty beyond word count alone.

Why this is a Large Print edition

  • All eight directions, including reversed words — same rule as Hard
  • Same word list and word count as our Medium puzzle — full challenge, not a simplified one
  • 15×12 grid: fewer rows than a standard 15×15, freeing real vertical space for larger lettering
  • 20pt or larger lettering throughout, verified to actually fit the grid, not just requested
  • Simplified Puzzle Passport with no fill-in blanks, leaving maximum room for the letters themselves

The whole Halloween season on a single sheet: 100 words on a 35x35 grid, from the everyday (pumpkin, candy, costume) to the less common (poltergeist, incantation, gargoyle, amulet).

The shortest words ("bat", "web", "fog" and "goo", 3 letters each) give a solver somewhere to start, and the longest ("jackolantern", 12 letters) is spelled as one word to fit the grid. The list runs from creatures (werewolf, goblin, wraith) and places (graveyard, crypt, dungeon) to sounds (shriek, cackle, creak) and the vocabulary of fear itself (eerie, sinister, frightful).

Words run in all eight directions, including reversed, so this is a long sitting rather than a coffee break.

Vocabulary analysis

Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.

With an average word length of 6.2 letters, this puzzle sits at a moderate 50.4% grid coverage, balancing genuine challenge with enough empty space to keep scanning manageable. 5 of its words share letters with at least one other word on the list, so a single letter in the grid can belong to more than one hidden answer — a real source of extra difficulty beyond word count alone.

Why this is a Giant, 100-word edition

  • All eight directions, including reversed words — same rule as Hard
  • Up to 100 words — nearly three times Hard's maximum word count
  • 35×35 grid, our largest, built specifically to fit that many words without crowding
  • Frequent overlaps between words, same density approach as Hard
  • Simplified Puzzle Passport, same as Large Print, freeing space for the much bigger grid
