South America Word Search
Free printable South America word search puzzles: countries, landmarks and real regional geography vocabulary.
This South America collection includes three word searches built around the countries and geography of the continent, each aimed at a different kind of solver. Easy covers nations nearly everyone already recognizes. Medium widens the geographic spread. Hard turns to details that take real familiarity with the continent to place.
Every printable PDF includes an answer key and is reviewed before publication.

Best for ages 5–8 and first-time solvers.
This is for a solver who already recognizes these countries from a classroom map or personal travel, and just wants to find them in the grid.
Words run only left-to-right or top-to-bottom, so there's no hidden trick waiting for a beginner.
It's the version for a first geography lesson, an early classroom unit, or a calm few minutes with a pencil.
Vocabulary analysis
Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.
With an average word length of 6.7 letters, this puzzle is densely packed at 55.8% grid coverage — less empty space means fewer easy gaps to scan past, so finding each word takes closer attention.
Why we chose this word list
This Easy list deliberately includes every mainland South American country, so a solver leaves with a complete picture of the continent's nations, not just the largest few.
"Guyana" and "Suriname" are included even though they are smaller and less internationally visible, avoiding the common shortcut of naming only Brazil and Argentina.
Why this level is easy
- Only horizontal and vertical words — no diagonals
- No reversed words
- Short, everyday vocabulary
- No uncommon spellings
- Minimal overlaps between words
South America — Medium Word Search
| Grid size | 15x15 |
|---|---|
| Words to find | 15 |
| Font size | 13 pt |
| Paper | A4 & US Letter |
| Answer key | Included (page 2) |
| Puzzle ID | SA-M-060 · v2026.4 |
Ideal for upper elementary students and casual puzzle fans.
This version moves past the most familiar countries into ones that take real familiarity with the continent to place correctly.
Diagonal words appear here for the first time, so scanning takes real attention rather than a straight read.
It sits between a beginner's puzzle and a real challenge, without needing an atlas memorized to solve.
Vocabulary analysis
Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.
With an average word length of 7.6 letters, this puzzle sits at a moderate 50.7% grid coverage, balancing genuine challenge with enough empty space to keep scanning manageable. 2 of its words share letters with at least one other word on the list, so a single letter in the grid can belong to more than one hidden answer — a real source of extra difficulty beyond word count alone.
Why we chose this word list
"Pampas" and "Patagonia" are correctly distinguished as two different Argentine regions with very different climates — grassland versus cold, arid steppe.
"Galápagos" is included as the islands famous for shaping Darwin's theory of evolution — a real, significant scientific connection, not just a place name.
Why this level is medium
- Horizontal, vertical and diagonal words
- No reversed words
- Mixed word lengths, some less common vocabulary
- Moderate overlaps between words

Designed for experienced solvers and adults.
This is for someone who wants real command of South American geography, not just the handful of countries everyone already knows.
Every direction is in play, including reversed words, with filler letters built to resemble genuine answers.
It takes sustained attention rather than a glance, built for someone who takes geography seriously.
Vocabulary analysis
Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.
With an average word length of 9.2 letters, this puzzle sits at a moderate 46.0% grid coverage, balancing genuine challenge with enough empty space to keep scanning manageable.
Why we chose this word list
"Cordillera" and "altiplano" are the genuine Spanish-origin geography terms used in English for an Andean mountain chain and high plateau — precise, not translated loosely.
We named all seven mainland capitals with single-word names (Montevideo, Asunción, Brasília, Quito, Caracas, Georgetown, Paramaribo) together, since capitals are often the hardest part of South American geography to recall.
Why this level is hard
- All eight directions, including reversed words
- Longer, denser word list
- Similar-looking decoy letter sequences in the filler
- Frequent overlaps between words
