Countries Word Search
Free printable countries word search puzzles: from the most familiar nations to some of the world's hardest country names to spell.
This Countries collection includes three word searches built around the nations of the world, each aimed at a different kind of solver. Easy covers countries recognized on nearly every world map. Best for ages 5–8 and first-time solvers.
This is for a solver who already recognizes these countries from a classroom map or the news, and just wants to find them in the grid.
Words run only left-to-right or top-to-bottom, so there's no hidden trick waiting for a beginner.
It's the version for a first geography lesson, an early classroom unit, or a calm few minutes with a pencil.
Vocabulary analysis
Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.
With an average word length of 5.4 letters, this puzzle sits at a moderate 45.0% grid coverage, balancing genuine challenge with enough empty space to keep scanning manageable.
Why we chose this word list
We deliberately spread this list across five continents rather than clustering it in Europe, since "countries" as a first geography lesson should feel genuinely global.
Every country here has a short, single-word name with no unusual spelling, matching our easy-level rule.
Why this level is easy
- Only horizontal and vertical words — no diagonals
- No reversed words
- Short, everyday vocabulary
- No uncommon spellings
- Minimal overlaps between words
Countries — Medium Word Search
| Grid size | 15x15 |

Ideal for upper elementary students and casual puzzle fans.
This version moves past the most familiar nations into ones that take real familiarity with a world map to place correctly.
Diagonal words appear here for the first time, so scanning takes real attention rather than a straight read.
It sits between a beginner's puzzle and a real challenge, without needing an atlas memorized to solve.
Vocabulary analysis
Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.
With an average word length of 7.3 letters, this puzzle sits at a moderate 48.9% grid coverage, balancing genuine challenge with enough empty space to keep scanning manageable. 2 of its words share letters with at least one other word on the list, so a single letter in the grid can belong to more than one hidden answer — a real source of extra difficulty beyond word count alone.
Why we chose this word list
We included both hemispheres and multiple language families in the same list, so no single region dominates the puzzle.
"Turkey" straddles two continents (Europe and Asia) — a genuine geography fact worth noting rather than filing it under just one.
Why this level is medium
- Horizontal, vertical and diagonal words
- No reversed words
- Mixed word lengths, some less common vocabulary
- Moderate overlaps between words
Countries — Hard Word Search
| Grid size | 20x20 |
|---|---|
| Words to find | 20 |
| Font size | 11 pt |
| Paper | A4 & US Letter |

Designed for experienced solvers and adults.
This is for someone who wants real command of world geography, including some of the hardest country names to spell correctly, not just a longer list of familiar nations.
Every direction is in play, including reversed words, with filler letters built to resemble genuine answers.
It takes sustained attention rather than a glance, built for someone who takes geography seriously.
Vocabulary analysis
Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.
With an average word length of 10.1 letters, this puzzle sits at a moderate 50.2% grid coverage, balancing genuine challenge with enough empty space to keep scanning manageable. 2 of its words share letters with at least one other word on the list, so a single letter in the grid can belong to more than one hidden answer — a real source of extra difficulty beyond word count alone.
Why we chose this word list
We grouped the five "-stan" countries (Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan) deliberately, since Central Asia is consistently underrepresented in geography puzzles.
"Liechtenstein" is included as one of the smallest and most commonly misspelled country names in the world — a genuine spelling challenge, not padding.
Why this level is hard
- All eight directions, including reversed words
- Longer, denser word list
- Similar-looking decoy letter sequences in the filler
- Frequent overlaps between words
Countries — Large Print Word Search
Designed specifically for adults, seniors and anyone who prefers easy-to-read puzzles.

Best for adults, seniors, and anyone who prefers larger, easier-to-read print.
This large print edition reuses the exact same word list as our Medium puzzle, at the same real difficulty -- all eight directions, including reversed. Only the presentation changes: oversized 7.3-letter-average lettering on a shorter, wider grid, with a simplified Puzzle Passport that skips the fill-in blanks to leave more room for the letters themselves.
The shortest words ("norway" and "greece") and longest ("australia" and "indonesia") are unchanged from the Medium edition -- this is the same 15-word challenge (germany, portugal, argentina, australia, indonesia, thailand, vietnam, colombia, nigeria, morocco, finland, norway, greece, turkey, poland), not a simplified one. What changes is entirely typographic.
Vocabulary analysis
Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.
With an average word length of 7.3 letters, this puzzle is densely packed at 61.1% grid coverage — less empty space means fewer easy gaps to scan past, so finding each word takes closer attention. 2 of its words share letters with at least one other word on the list, so a single letter in the grid can belong to more than one hidden answer — a real source of extra difficulty beyond word count alone.
Why we chose this word list
We deliberately did not simplify this puzzle to make it "large print": the two competing large-print word search sites that currently rank highest for this search keep full difficulty (all directions, real word counts), and our own testing agreed -- readers searching for large print word searches generally want a genuine challenge, not a beginner grid with bigger letters.
The grid is 15x12 rather than a standard 15x15: three fewer rows free up real vertical space on the page for larger lettering, verified by calculation rather than estimated -- the same word list at 15x15 would only reach about 16pt, while 15x12 reaches close to 20pt.
Why this is a Large Print edition
- All eight directions, including reversed words — same rule as Hard
- Same word list and word count as our Medium puzzle — full challenge, not a simplified one
- 15×12 grid: fewer rows than a standard 15×15, freeing real vertical space for larger lettering
- 20pt or larger lettering throughout, verified to actually fit the grid, not just requested
- Simplified Puzzle Passport with no fill-in blanks, leaving maximum room for the letters themselves
