Books of the Bible Word Search

Free printable Bible books word search puzzles: from the most familiar Old and New Testament books to some of the lesser-known ones.

This Books of the Bible collection includes three word searches built around the 66 books of the Christian Bible, each aimed at a different kind of solver. Easy covers the books nearly everyone already recognizes. Medium adds books that take more familiarity with the full canon. Hard turns to the complete list, including books many regular readers still mix up the order of.

Every printable PDF includes an answer key and is reviewed before publication.

Best for ages 5–8 and first-time solvers.

This is for a reader who already knows the most familiar books by name, from Sunday school or regular reading, and just wants to find them in the grid.

Words run only left-to-right or top-to-bottom, so there's no hidden trick waiting for a beginner.

It's the version for a first Sunday school activity, an early Bible study, or a calm few minutes with a pencil.

Vocabulary analysis

Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.

With an average word length of 5.8 letters, this puzzle sits at a moderate 48.3% grid coverage, balancing genuine challenge with enough empty space to keep scanning manageable. 1 of its words share letters with at least one other word on the list, so a single letter in the grid can belong to more than one hidden answer — a real source of extra difficulty beyond word count alone.

Why we chose this word list

We only used books with single-word names throughout every level (no "1 Samuel" or "Song of Solomon"), since our grids can't place a name containing a space.

Old and New Testament books are mixed together rather than kept separate, since this puzzle is about book names generally, with dedicated Characters and Places puzzles covering more specific ground.

Why this level is easy

  • Only horizontal and vertical words — no diagonals
  • No reversed words
  • Short, everyday vocabulary
  • No uncommon spellings
  • Minimal overlaps between words

Ideal for upper elementary students and casual puzzle fans.

This version moves past the most familiar books into ones that take genuine familiarity with the full Old and New Testament to place correctly.

Diagonal words appear here for the first time, so scanning takes real attention rather than a straight read.

It sits between a beginner's puzzle and a real challenge, without needing to have the whole Bible memorized.

Vocabulary analysis

Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.

With an average word length of 5.1 letters, this puzzle stays relatively open at 34.2% grid coverage, making it easier to spot new words at a glance.

Why we chose this word list

We grouped several of the twelve "Minor Prophets" together (Hosea, Joel, Amos, Micah) — a real, traditional grouping in Old Testament study, not an arbitrary selection.

"Revelation" is included as the final book of the Bible, distinct in tone and content from the Gospels and letters that precede it in the New Testament.

Why this level is medium

  • Horizontal, vertical and diagonal words
  • No reversed words
  • Mixed word lengths, some less common vocabulary
  • Moderate overlaps between words

Designed for experienced solvers and adults.

This is for someone who wants real command of the full 66-book sequence, not just the handful of books everyone already knows.

Every direction is in play, including reversed words, with filler letters built to resemble genuine answers.

It takes sustained attention rather than a glance, built for someone who takes their Bible knowledge seriously.

Vocabulary analysis

Measured directly from this puzzle's own grid — not a generic estimate.

With an average word length of 8.4 letters, this puzzle sits at a moderate 42.0% grid coverage, balancing genuine challenge with enough empty space to keep scanning manageable. 2 of its words share letters with at least one other word on the list, so a single letter in the grid can belong to more than one hidden answer — a real source of extra difficulty beyond word count alone.

Why we chose this word list

This level completes the twelve Minor Prophets (Obadiah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi) begun in Medium — together, all twelve appear somewhere across our three levels.

"Deuteronomy" and "Ecclesiastes" are included as two of the longest and most frequently misspelled book names in the entire Bible.

Why this level is hard

  • All eight directions, including reversed words
  • Longer, denser word list
  • Similar-looking decoy letter sequences in the filler
  • Frequent overlaps between words

Why this is a Large Print edition

  • All eight directions, including reversed words — same rule as Hard
  • Same word list and word count as our Medium puzzle — full challenge, not a simplified one
  • 15×12 grid: fewer rows than a standard 15×15, freeing real vertical space for larger lettering
  • 20pt or larger lettering throughout, verified to actually fit the grid, not just requested
  • Simplified Puzzle Passport with no fill-in blanks, leaving maximum room for the letters themselves
